AutoCAD: Create Mechanical Drawing

When we work with AutoCAD, we need to setup drawing properties related with paper size (A0, A1, A2, A3, A4). In this post, I will show you how to setup properties for A4 drawing, you can do the same with another paper size.

Firstly, Open AutoCAD 2018 and Create New file (Ctrl+N), choose acadiso.dwt and open. Then press F7 to turn off the grid. After that setup general parameters for drawing. You can see more in this video:

After setting general parameters, we will setup A4 drawing. I will separate into 5 steps and do it step by step.

        1.Setup Style Manager

          1.1.Text Style

Command ‘st’ to turn on Text Style. You can setup the Font, Font Style, Width Factor and Height of text and ‘Set Current’ to make default for the drawing. To finish click ‘Close’.

    1.2. Dimension Style Manager

Command ‘d’ to turn on Dimension Style Manager, choose ‘ISO-25’ and click Modify.

In tab Line, you can setup the color, line type of Diemension line and extension line, you can aslo setup the ‘extend beyond dim line’: the extend distace from the dimension line and ‘Offset from origin’: distance from object to extension line:

In Symbols and Arrows tab, you can choose ‘Arrowheads’, ‘Arrow size’, ‘Center Mark’:

In Text tab, you can setup the ‘Text apperance’, ‘Text placement’ and ‘Text alignment’:

In Fit tab, you can setup the ‘Fit options’, ‘Text placement’

In Primary Units tab, you can setup the unit format of dimension, the precision, and the type of decimal separator.

Then click OK and Set Current to make default for this drawing.

       1.2.3 Layer setting

Command ‘la’ to open Layer Setting, you can setup some layers for show, hide, modify and print the drawing. Make new layers with parameter such as:

+ Hidden: color: blue and line type: hidden

+ Thin line: color: blue and line type: continous

+Dimension: color: magenta and type line: continous

+Text: color: green and type line: continous

     2. Command in AutoCAD

In this part of the post, I show you commands to create object, modify object, create geomatric and dimension constraint.

        2.1. Create object

You can create all object in AutoCAD by command such as: line, ractangle, circle,… after typing the command then press ‘space’ to turn on the command.

       2.2. Modify object

You can modify all objects after creating such as: position (move, offset,…), copy (copy, array),…

      2.3. Create dimensions

After creating object, you need to create the dimension that help manufaturer knows exactly your products.

      3. Create title block

You can use the create command and modify command to create the title block with A4 paper size (297 x 210 mm):

      4. Create mechanical drawing

You can use all command in AutoCAD (create, modify, dimension,…) to draw mechanical drawing as below:

     5. Print the drawing

You can print the drawing through real or virtal printer.

      5.1. Copy file from AutoCAD to Microsoft Word

 When we work, sometimes we need to prepare a report (word file), so we need copy file from AutoCAD to Word. I recommend BetterWMF software to do it.

Here is the interface of BetterWMF software (Chuyen CAD sang Word is the software name after installing):

Click Apply and drag the objects you need copy, press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to paste in Word

     5.2. Print drawing

Choose Print => Page Setup to create A4 size and setup Printer, paper size, plot area, and plot style table

Then click OK and press Ctrl+P to print your drawing look like:
